Maternal Health Deserts in Texas
Maternity ward closures in Texas are leaving mothers behind, making lifesaving care harder to access. Some mothers have to travel over an hour for basic pre-natal care, and unexpected complications could mean having to deliver without support or loss during childbirth. About 70% of rural counties in Texas do not have hospitals that will deliver babies, if they have a hospital at all. This is particularly prevalent in East Texas and poorer rural counties. More than half of all rural hospitals in Texas are at risk of closure, leaving expectant mothers to face increased financial and emotional stress and increase risk of complication during pregnancy. Our Health Equity advocates for accessible and affordable maternal healthcare for all Americans, no matter where they live. Read more here.
