Safety Net Hospitals Face Trouble
A new Harvard study reveals that more hospitals are closing than opening across the US, and urban hospitals are closing at the same rate as rural ones. In recent years, hospitals have been bracing to lose billions in funding, with many fearing they would have to close as a result of significant funding cuts. Research and response has been largely concentrated on rural areas, but urban hospitals are closing at similar rates. Hospital closures have increased by 4% year over year and openings have decreased 3% year over year, creating a net loss of 216 hospitals.
