American Food Insecurity is Growing
Recent research indicates that food deserts are becoming more prevalent among American communities. Food deserts are areas where food access is limited due to a lack of full-service grocery stores, transportation, or high levels of poverty. In the last several years, the amount of food deserts has grown, especially among communities with high numbers of Black, Hispanic, or disabled residents. Living in a food desert and lacking access to nutritious, fresh food is associated with chronic conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity, Our Health Equity advocates for practical solutions that ensure widespread availability to nutritious and accessible food for all Americans.
