Harvard Student Attempts to Address Food Deserts

Pam Farrell, a second-year master’s student at Harvard, opened a grocery store in her hometown of Toronto to address food insecurity. She noticed that low-income neighborhoods didn’t have as much access to affordable food and sought to overcome the barriers that impact an individual’s ability to access food, like transportation and a lack of food banks. She opened Grow Community Food Literacy Centre, her non-profit, low-cost grocery store, to improve access and education surrounding healthy food for low-income communities.
