North Carolina Food Deserts

Tropical Storm Helene has turned some North Carolina communities into food deserts, but community organizations are stepping in to fill that void. The storm effected several local grocery stores that are still unable to reopen, leaving residents without access to full-service grocery stores and fresh produce. Bounty and Soul, a local nonprofit hands out fresh produce in rural North Carolina communities, providing residents with nutritious alternatives to processed and canned foods. Other nonprofits, like TRACTOR, sell fresh, community grown produce to fill the gap that full-service grocery stores have left in North Carolina. Our Health Equity advocates for practical solutions, like these nonprofits, that ensure widespread availability to nutritious and accessible food for all Americans. Read more here.
