Maternal Healthcare in Crisis

Across rural communities, maternity wards are closing, leaving expectant mothers without nearby facilities to receive care. Over the past 10 years, more than 100 rural hospitals have closed outright, while many others have closed their maternity wards or suspended maternity care services. As a result, rural mothers face significantly worse outcomes, with maternal mortality rates averaging 81% higher than those of their urban counterparts. Maternal health deserts also limit a mother's access to preventive care throughout pregnancy. Recent health care professional shortages resulting from changes to the H-1B visa program have further exacerbated this problem.
