Seattle Neighborhood Loses Grocery Store
Lake City, Seattle’s main grocery store, a Fred Meyer, will close in October, leaving the community without easy access to nutritious groceries. The store closure will force residents to travel more than a mile to the closest full-service supermarket. Many are concerned that this will transform the area into a food desert. The Lake City Food Bank will feel the direct effects of this closure, seeing an increase in demand and an end to the donations that Fred Meyer contributes annually. With Fred Meyer closing, the town will also lose its only pharmacy. Grocery store and pharmacy closures can have disastrous effects on the long-term health of a community as residents are forced to forgo nutritious food and preventative medicine. Our Health Equity advocates for every American to have access to healthy, affordable food and vital, life-saving medicines, no matter where they live. Read more here.
