America’s Urban Healthcare Problem

The US Government Accountability Office released a report examining the reasons urban hospitals are closing and the effects closures have on impacted communities. About half of America’s hospitals service urban populations, providing complex surgeries and lifesaving emergency care. But in the last five years, more urban hospitals have closed than opened. There are many factors that contribute to hospital closures, including financial struggles, aging facilities, and declining patient volumes. Following hospital closures, communities are faced with a lack of access to care without proper notice and forcing patients to travel long distances for essential care.
