Charity Care is Failing Patients
Patients who qualify for charity care are getting hit with huge hospital bills after emergency procedures, even though programs exist to cover those costs. Charity care is designed to help low-income individual afford the care they need, providing financial assistance for testing and treatment but there are loopholes in the system that pass high costs onto patients. Non-staff physicians and specialists often don’t have to comply with a hospital’s charity care requirements and certain services don’t have to be discounted, leaving a hole in the system that places huge costs on patients.
