Charity Care Is Hard to Come By

Despite the growing number of uninsured Americans, nonprofit hospitals are failing to provide adequate charity care to patients who need it. Nonprofit hospitals receive millions of dollars in federal, state, and local tax breaks so they can provide care for patients who cannot afford their medical bills, but this system rarely works as intended. Patients can be turned away because their income is too high to qualify for charity care but they cannot afford to pay costly medical bills on their own. Additionally, hospitals are not required to make charity care a priority, with many only setting aside a small sliver of their budget to provide charity care.
