Chicago Activists Combat Food Insecurity

Chicago’s South and West side are plagued by growing food insecurity, leaving many residents without access to affordable, nutritious foods. Activist groups like Gardeneers and Market Box, recognized this lack of access as “food apartheid” that disproportionately effects Black and Hispanic communities. These activists’ partner with community organizations to expand access by providing bags of food to families in need, opening and upgrading grocery stores in underprivileged neighborhoods, and opening community fridges throughout the city.
