Main Lawmakers Respond to Maternity Ward Closures

A new Maine law took effect in early April requires hospitals to provide at least 120 days’ notice before closing a maternity ward or other newborn care services. The protects patients when birthing centers are slated to close, allowing expecting parents to make alternate plans before a closure. The last decade has been a difficult time for birthing centers In Maine alone, 10 centers closed, underscoring the need to support parents when a center is forced to close.
