Urban Farms Fight Food Insecurity
As food deserts continue to pop-up in urban areas, non-profits are working to equip families with the tools to grow, cook, and share their own food. Urban Roots, a Minnesota based non-profit, offers young people internships and programs that bring them access to vital food products that would have otherwise been out of reach. In Minnesota, 26% of households with at least one child under 18 reported not having access to enough affordable and nutritious food. Community programs like Urban Root’s Mobile Market help bring make healthy food more accessible to people living in food deserts and empower young people to make informed food choices that improve long-term health outcomes.
